In 2018, I had the good fortune of being selected as a visiting fellow for the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming. At that time, I first met Brandon Lewis, who both served as a staff member there as well as shared my long interest in the role of the U.S. Army in the American West. While his enthusiasm for the subject was far from unique, what set him apart was his dedication to exacting research, which he willingly shares via an array of professional interpretations. After more than a half-century of observing, and in fact, in my youth participating in reenacting, Brandon represents a rare example of a true living historian. Instead of just donning readymade reproduction clothing and gear, he seeks sources for the highest caliber replicas. In fact, in many instances, he fabricates items himself with painstaking accuracy.

Unlike several others, he also does not just appear in costume. He embodies the period, which he represents both physically and based on in-depth knowledge of the subject matter including tactics, equestrian skills, and a range of impressive understanding that he enthusiastically and authentically shares with individuals and audiences. While I am delighted that his portrayals of the past are superb, I am equally impressed that he also has embraced modern technology. As such, the launching of a dynamic, informative website is a welcome addition to his already impressive “kit bag.” Bravo Brandon for all you do!

His personality and skill of presenting multiple topics really makes him one of the best historical tour guides and experts in the West. From covering the details of the Little Bighorn, to the western exploits of Buffalo Bill, to the military history of Yellowstone National Park, Brandon has acquired a level of knowledge that comes out in his masterful presentations that are unparalleled. I have enjoyed hearing him speak at multiple events regarding a multitude of historical topics. He is THE person to have as your guide into American History.
